Publication Statement

The Magnolia Classic is a golf day organised by SGH Events at Horsforth Golf Club in Yorkshire. This publication is not its official record. It was made independently, in the way we would document a hotel or a city: by paying attention to the things an event produces around its stated purpose.

The stated purpose is golf, and golf provides the structure. The subject is everything that surrounds it. A scorecard holder tucked into a back pocket that reads, at a glance, as a passport. A bowl of tees on the grass. A cartoon headcover riding a bag of serious equipment. Cars, banners, greetings, interviews, champagne, an envelope in Masters green. Sixty-nine photographs made in a single day in July, arranged in the day's own sequence: arrival, ritual, hospitality, play, recognition.

Not one score is recorded in these pages, and the day loses nothing by its absence. The publication is a study of how a premium sporting event is assembled: through preparation, partnership, ritual and quiet observation. It is the first volume in a series about how occasions are constructed around the things people gather to watch and play.
