Publications

The long form.

Where a study is a chapter, a publication is the book. These are complete editorial volumes, built for a single place, brand or world, and read as a sequence rather than a page. Each one exists to show what the studio can build when given the space to build it.

What Publications Are

mkd STUDIO publishes selected work as long-form volumes when a story earns more than a single study. A publication runs to a hundred pages or more, designed as a digital reader with its own pacing, structure and typography, built specifically for the place or world it documents. Each volume is also produced as a physical book, a printed first edition for those who prefer to hold the work.

These volumes are demonstrations of the kind of long-form storytelling available to commissioning partners, the type of work a hotel, a team or a house might use to mark a season, an opening or an anniversary. One volume is published so far, with a second in progress.

The Spaces Between

Formula One, Volume I

Ten chapters, one weekend, Silverstone and Qatar. Most people watch the race. This volume watches everything else, the hour before the gates open, the fence that separates witnessed from unwitnessed, the rain, the red flag, the five lights that mean everything and nothing until they go dark. A record of a Grand Prix from the spaces the cameras don’t choose.

The Ned, Doha

A Study of Place

Scale, held quietly. The Ned Doha occupies a building that could overwhelm, and chooses not to. This volume follows that restraint through marble corridors, members’ rooms and the spaces between arrival and rest, where luxury is measured in the absence of effort rather than its display.
