The Reader Who Was Never There

The last observer in any chain of editorial work is someone who will never visit the place the work is about. They will form a complete picture of it from images alone, and that picture will be, in certain respects, more detailed and more consistent than the one held by many people who were actually there.

This reader is the furthest removed from the source — further than the photographer who made the images, further than the editor who selected them, further even than the person who commissioned the work. They arrive at the end of a chain of decisions none of which were made with them specifically in mind. And yet they are, in a sense, the person the whole chain was made for: the one who encounters the work in its final form, without context, without the benefit of standing in the room, and forms their understanding of a place entirely from what the edit chose to give them.

What this reader gets right is often surprising. Atmosphere travels well through a good photograph. Character, intention, the sense of what a place values and what it does not: these survive the reduction from experience to image more reliably than scale, sequence, or the feeling of time passing inside a room. A reader who has never been to a place can sometimes describe its atmosphere more accurately than a visitor who spent two days there distracted by other things.

What they miss is equally consistent. They have no sense of how large the rooms actually are. They do not know which images were made in the first hour and which in the last. They cannot feel the weight of the silence, or whether it was warm or cool, or what came before the lobby in the approach from the street. The edit answered none of these questions for them, and so they remain unanswered.

The question the editor should carry through every decision is a simple one: what does this person need, and what is the most honest version of it the images can carry? Not the most spectacular. Not the most complete. The most honest: the version that would hold up if they ever did visit, and the version that remains worth making even if they never do.
