More Persuasive Than Being There

People form stronger opinions about places they have only seen in photographs than about places they have visited. The edited image is more persuasive than the experience.
This seems counterintuitive until you consider what the edit does. The experience of a place is unfiltered: it includes the moment you couldn't find the entrance, the table that was slightly too close to the next one, the hour when the light was flat and the space felt less than it had promised. The photograph removes all of this. What remains is the space at its best angle, in its best light, organised into a composition that the actual room never quite achieves from any position a standing person naturally occupies. The edited image is not a document of the place. It is an argument for it, made by someone who has removed everything that didn't serve the argument.
The person who has only seen the photographs has received only the argument. Their opinion of the place is built entirely from its strongest moments, presented in the most favourable possible light, stripped of the friction that actual presence always involves. Their picture of the space is in some ways more complete than the one held by someone who visited on an overcast afternoon and found the lobby smaller than expected.
This is not a deception, or not necessarily. Every medium makes choices about what to include and what to leave out. The photograph's choices are simply more thorough and more legible than most. What matters is that the person making the edit understands the weight of what they are doing: that the images they select will become, for many people who see them, the definitive version of the place. More vivid than memory, more consistent than experience, and more persuasive than almost anything else a space could offer.
The responsibility that comes with that persuasiveness is not to represent the place accurately in every detail. It is to be honest about what the place is genuinely capable of: to make the argument from real evidence, not invented atmosphere.
